Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO HEARD HER SCREAM

Emily stayed on the ledge for twenty-three minutes before anyone found her.
She knew that later because the emergency report recorded the first call at 3:18 p.m.
At the time, she measured life differently.
Breath.
Pain.
Baby movement.
Don’t move too fast.
Don’t look down.
Don’t fall.
She tried shouting twice.
The first attempt came out as a whisper.
The second became a broken scream.
“HELP!”
No answer.
Then she heard a voice above.
A woman.
“Hello?”
Emily almost cried from relief.
“HELP ME!”
The woman’s name was Nora Bell, a resort housekeeper walking a maintenance path above the lower terrace.
Nora heard the second scream.
She looked over the safety rail and saw white fabric on the rock below.
Within minutes, resort security arrived.
Then fire rescue.
Then paramedics.
Ryan was nowhere near the cliff.
That mattered immediately.
By the time Emily was stabilized and lifted from the ledge, he had already told resort staff his wife had “gone back to the room with a headache.”
The lie was documented before anyone accused him.
At the hospital, doctors found:
a fractured collarbone,
severe bruising,
a deep laceration along her forearm,
and signs of placental stress.
But the fetal heartbeat was strong.
Emily cried when she heard it.
Then a detective entered the room.
Mara Chen.
“Mrs. Dawson, can you tell me what happened?”
Emily looked at her.
“My husband pushed me.”
No hesitation.
No confusion.
Mara nodded once.
“Did he fall too?”
“No.”
“Did he try to help you?”
May you like
Emily’s face changed.
“He laughed.”
