Chapter 8 - EMILY WENT INTO LABOR EARLY

At thirty-two weeks, Emily woke with contractions.

Too early.

She was rushed to the hospital.

For six hours, doctors tried to stop labor.

For four more, they watched.

Then her blood pressure dropped.

The baby’s heart rate became unstable.

Emergency delivery.

Emily remembered bright lights.

Hands.

A nurse saying:

“Stay with me.”

Then a cry.

Small.

Angry.

Alive.

Her daughter was born at four pounds, one ounce.

They named her Grace.

She spent nineteen days in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Ryan was not allowed near either of them.

He petitioned through counsel for notice rights regarding the birth.

The court addressed parental-status questions separately from the criminal case.

Emily hated that complexity.

Part of her wanted the law to erase him completely.

It could not.

Biology remained biology.

Rights were not absolute.

Safety orders mattered.

So did procedure.

Emily learned that justice often moved slower than rage.

She also learned something else.

Survival was not the dramatic moment on the ledge.

It was feeding Grace every three hours while her shoulder still hurt.

It was physical therapy.

Nightmares.

Walking past balconies without freezing.

Answering questions she hated.

Living anyway.
