Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL WAS ABOUT INTENT

Ryan’s defense admitted the push.

By then, denying it was impossible.

The battle became intent.

Did he mean to kill Emily?

Or did he commit a violent act in rage without forming that intent?

Prosecutors built the timeline.

Debt.

Secret guarantees.

Audit confrontation.

Insurance increase.

Trust questions.

California trip.

Cliff.

No rescue call.

Insurance contact after leaving.

Defense lawyers argued financial stress did not equal murder planning.

Correct.

They argued estate questions were common in marriage.

Also correct.

They argued the insurance call could reflect panic.

Possible.

But then the audio played.

Goodbye, Emily.

The courtroom went still.

Ryan looked down.

Emily did not.

She looked directly at him.

Not because she wanted him afraid.

Because for months he had controlled the final image in her mind.

His face above the cliff.

Laughing.

She wanted a new one.

Ryan sitting beneath fluorescent courtroom lights while strangers examined facts he thought the ocean would erase.

The jury convicted him of attempted murder and related offenses supported by the evidence.

The judge imposed a lengthy prison sentence.

Not because Emily was pregnant alone.

May you like

Not because Ryan was cruel.

Because the evidence proved the crime.
