Chapter 13 - THE SETTLEMENT WITH VANESSA

Vanessa did not receive 4.5%.

She also did not walk away with nothing.

Independent valuation and litigation risk produced settlement.

Ryan paid the remaining support balance with interest.

Vanessa received:

$118,000 cash settlement

for unresolved debt and costs.

Northline approved a smaller equity transfer:

1.6% non-voting economic interest,

subject to restrictions.

Estimated current value:

around $670,000.

Why accept less?

Litigation could take years.

Enforceability uncertain.

Share restrictions complicated valuation.

Vanessa wanted closure.

Ryan wanted certainty.

Claire had no role in deciding the settlement.

That mattered.

She refused to become negotiator between her fiancé and his ex.

The triangle ended when each person handled their own obligations.

Vanessa later returned the old engagement ring to Ryan through counsel.

Not because it had legal importance.

Because she no longer wanted the symbol.

Ryan mailed it back.

Message:

Keep it, sell it, throw it away. It is yours.

Vanessa sold it.

Paid legal fees.

Practical ending.

Vanessa’s settlement also required her to release any claim against Claire.

Claire had never owed her anything.

Still, Ryan’s team wanted certainty that marriage-related allegations would not somehow expand into Claire’s assets.

Grace insisted the release say:

No admission by Claire of knowledge, participation, or interference.

Vanessa signed without complaint.

“I never should’ve made her part of this.”

That mattered.

The original slap had made Claire the visible enemy because she wore the wedding dress.

The settlement finally put responsibility back on the people who had actually signed the old documents.
