Chapter 8 - VANESSA DIDN'T KNOW EVERYTHING
Vanessa had a copy of the contingent transfer document.
Not the original.
She believed it valid.
Her lawyer had sent Ryan notice four weeks earlier:
Do not complete marriage or qualifying asset transfer without resolving Vanessa Cole’s rights.
Ryan told Vanessa:
“The document is fake.”
She answered:
“Then prove it.”
He did not.
Instead he proceeded with the wedding.
Vanessa interpreted that as contempt.
Then she learned from a mutual friend that Claire had signed a prenup.
Vanessa assumed Claire knew the fight existed.
That was why she arrived furious.
Her slap had not been planned by Ryan.
Her humiliation of Claire was her own choice.
Vanessa later apologized.
Vanessa also had to confront why she chose the wedding as her battlefield.
She could have served Ryan through counsel.
In fact, her lawyer already had.
She could have emailed Claire.
She did not.
She wanted Ryan embarrassed.
Publicly.
She wanted the room to see that the perfect groom had unfinished history.
Then she saw Claire in the white dress.
All the anger moved toward the easiest target.
Vanessa admitted in therapy later:
“I wanted her to feel stupid.”
Why?
“Because I felt stupid for years.”
That did not make the slap understandable enough to excuse.
It made it transferable pain.
Vanessa had been humiliated privately.
She chose to humiliate Claire publicly.
That was her part of the cycle.
“I thought you were helping him bury me.”
Claire answered:
“So you hit me.”
“Yes.”
“You could have asked.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa did not defend it.
That made Claire angrier and calmer at once.
Then Grace asked Vanessa:
“Did Ryan ever promise he would leave Claire?”
Vanessa looked shocked.
“No.”
“Did he ever restart a romantic relationship with you?”
“No.”
“Any sex after breakup?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“One night.”
Claire’s stomach dropped.
“When?”
“Two years ago.”
Claire and Ryan had already started dating.
There it was.
Infidelity.
Not ongoing.
Not imaginary.
One night.
Vanessa’s one-night disclosure came with another uncomfortable fact.
She had not known Ryan was exclusive with Claire.
Ryan told her:
“It’s serious, but not locked down yet.”
Claire had believed they were exclusive for four months.
Messages confirmed Ryan had been vague with Vanessa and clear with Claire.
Vanessa asked:
“So I was cheating too?”
Claire answered:
“No.”
That surprised both of them.
Claire continued:
“He cheated on me. You were lied to differently.”
Vanessa looked ashamed anyway.
“I should have asked.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t.”
“Yes.”
Responsibility could be shared without becoming equal.
That distinction slowly reduced the hatred between the women.
