Chapter 2 - THE REST OF THE RECORDING

Daniel did not get the phone.
Elena had already uploaded the recording somewhere he could not reach.
That was the first thing he discovered when he grabbed for it and Elena simply let the device fall onto the rug.
Daniel froze.
Vanessa stared.
Elena smiled faintly.
“Go ahead.”
Daniel picked it up.
The recording was still playing.
His own voice:
“She’s already exhausted. Her mother, work, everything. Keep pushing.”
Vanessa:
“And if she finally tells me to leave?”
Daniel:
“Good. You cry. I say Elena’s unstable. We document it.”
A pause.
Then Vanessa’s voice, almost delighted:
“And then?”
Daniel:
“Once Elena breaks, we take the apartment.”
Vanessa laughed on the recording.
“How?”
Daniel answered:
“The postnup gives me emergency residential control if she becomes medically or emotionally unfit.”
Elena watched Daniel’s face.
He had forgotten that part.
Or convinced himself the recording did not exist.
Vanessa whispered:
“Oh my God.”
The recording continued.
Vanessa:
“What about her ownership?”
Daniel:
“She owns the apartment through the Mercer Residential Trust. But control and title are different. If she’s declared impaired, I can become acting residential manager.”
Vanessa:
“And I stay?”
Daniel:
“You get the guest wing and the management job.”
Vanessa:
“And Elena?”
Daniel laughed.
“She can go rest somewhere.”
The recording ended.
Silence.
Elena had heard it for the first time the previous night.
She had not slept afterward.
She had sat in the kitchen from 1:14 a.m. until sunrise listening to her husband plan to convert her exhaustion into a legal argument.
Not because he wanted the apartment’s title.
Because he wanted control.
And Daniel had always been better at understanding control than ownership.
He was an attorney.
Not a trust specialist.
But enough to be dangerous.
“Elena,” he said.
She looked at him.
“I can explain.”
“Please do.”
Vanessa stepped away from him.
Daniel noticed.
That hurt his confidence.
“The postnup clause is protective.”
“For whom?”
“For both of us.”
“Then why are you coaching your niece to make me look unstable?”
“I wasn’t.”
Elena raised one eyebrow.
He looked at the phone.
Bad answer.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“You said she already knew.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“Shut up.”
Elena’s eyes narrowed.
“Knew what?”
Vanessa’s face drained.
Daniel shouted:
“Vanessa.”
Too late.
Elena looked between them.
“What did I already know?”
Vanessa stared at Daniel.
Then at Elena.
Finally:
“That the apartment was supposed to become family property after the refinance.”
Elena went still.
“What refinance?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Vanessa whispered:
“Oh.”
May you like
That was the second secret.
And unlike the recording, Elena had not known it existed.
