Chapter 6 - VANESSA REALIZES SHE WAS COLLATERAL TOO

Vanessa asked to meet Elena privately.
Maya said:
“Public place.”
Elena chose a quiet hotel café.
Vanessa arrived without makeup.
No arrogance.
She sat.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena did not answer.
Vanessa looked down.
“Daniel told me you were already planning to move out.”
“Did he?”
“He said your mom needed you full time. That you’d live near her.”
“My mother is in assisted living.”
“I know that now.”
Elena stared.
Vanessa continued.
“He said the apartment would become a family asset.”
“Meaning his.”
“Meaning… ours.”
There it was.
Not innocence.
Entitlement.
But then Vanessa showed Elena something.
A guarantee agreement.
Vanessa had signed it.
Personal guarantor for Mercer Domestic Ventures.
Up to:
$300,000.
Elena stared.
“Why would you sign this?”
“Daniel said the management contract was already approved.”
“You guaranteed his loan?”
Vanessa started crying.
“I thought I was getting a business.”
Elena sat back.
Daniel had used Vanessa too.
Not in the same way.
Vanessa still chose cruelty.
Still dumped laundry.
Still mocked Elena.
Still participated in the plan to provoke her.
But she was not the architect.
She was bait with a paycheck attached.
Vanessa whispered:
“If the contract doesn’t exist, Northbridge can come after me.”
“Yes.”
“That’s why he kept saying you had to break.”
Elena’s face changed.
Not emotionally.
Structurally.
Daniel did not merely want control.
He needed Elena declared impaired before the lender discovered the management contract was fiction.
May you like
Time was closing.
The cruelty escalated because the debt had a deadline.
