Chapter 12 - THE CUSTODY CASE

Ava filed for separation and temporary custody orders.

She did not ask the court to erase Liam from Lily’s life forever.

Rachel advised against dramatic overreach.

The facts were already strong.

Liam had physically kicked Lily.

Medical records documented bruising.

He admitted the act in police interview.

His explanation:

“I believed she was not my child and I lost control.”

That explanation hurt him.

A child’s safety cannot depend on biological certainty.

The court ordered:

supervised parenting time,

anger-management treatment,

individual therapy,

no unsupervised contact until evaluator approval.

Liam complied.

At the first supervised visit, Lily cried when she saw him.

Then reached for a toy.

Not him.

Liam nearly broke.

The supervisor documented behavior neutrally.

He sat on the floor.

Did not force contact.

Read a book.

Waited.

At the fourth visit, Lily handed him a block.

He cried.

Ava heard about it later.

She felt nothing simple.

Not satisfaction.

Not forgiveness.

Only sadness.

Then Liam asked through Rachel if Ava would consider marriage counseling.

She said:

“No.”

Not yet.

Maybe never.

He had accused her of cheating.

That could perhaps be repaired.

He had secretly tested their child.

Maybe.

He had kicked Lily.

That changed the category.
