Chapter 9 - HOW THE BATHROOM NIGHT BEGAN

Elliot had not planned to smash Elena into a mirror when he entered the bathroom.
He came holding a document.
A voluntary evaluation agreement.
Private psychiatric facility.
Twenty-four-hour observation.
He said:
“Sign.”
Elena read it.
“No.”
“It’s one night.”
“No.”
“You haven’t slept.”
“I slept six hours.”
“You’re delusional about the financing.”
“I disagree with you.”
Vivian stood at the doorway.
“Elena, stop making this harder.”
Elena looked at her.
“For whom?”
Elliot’s voice changed.
“If you go voluntarily, this stays private.”
“And if I don’t?”
He stepped closer.
“We’ll do it another way.”
Elena understood then.
This was not about treatment.
It was about record creation.
Hospitalized wife.
Concerned husband.
Concerned mother.
Urgent governance meeting.
She put the agreement down.
“No.”
Elliot grabbed her.
Then the mirror cracked.
Meredith had made Elena rehearse one rule before the bathroom night.
“If something happens, do not argue medicine with Elliot.”
“What do I say?”
“Say what you consent to.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s enough.”
So when Elliot placed the evaluation agreement in front of her, Elena did not say:
I am not crazy.
She said:
“No.”
When he said she needed treatment, she did not debate symptoms.
She said:
“I do not consent to voluntary admission.”
Specific language narrowed the fight.

It did not stop his violence.
But it later made the record far clearer.
