Chapter 14 - MS. PARKER RETURNS ON HER TERMS

Ms. Parker returned to school.
Not full-time homeroom.
She chose:
literacy intervention,
teacher mentoring,
and two morning classes.
Her first week back, Vanessa appeared in the hallway.
Ms. Parker froze.
Then breathed.
Vanessa stopped several feet away.
“I won’t come closer.”
Good.
Then:
“I owe you an apology.”
Ms. Parker waited.
Vanessa said:
“I kept treating your classroom like a courtroom.”
That was accurate.
Then:
“I made every note into evidence.”
Ms. Parker nodded.
“And I was afraid not to write what you wanted.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.”
Ms. Parker did not say:
It’s okay.
She said:
“I hope you don’t do that to the next teacher.”
Vanessa answered:
“I’m trying not to.”
Enough.
Rachel watched from the doorway.
Not triumphant.
