Chapter 9 - VANESSA THREATENS THE WRONG PERSON
Vanessa confronted Rachel after school.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Rachel kept packing papers.
“I’m reviewing records.”
“You’re interfering in a custody case.”
“No.”
“You’re helping my ex-husband.”
“No.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I can make one phone call and have your career reviewed.”
Rachel looked up.
“To whom?”
Vanessa paused.
Rachel continued:
“Please do. Put it in writing.”
That stopped her.
Threats lose power when asked to become documents.
Vanessa changed tactics.
“My son has rights.”
“Yes.”
“You are violating them.”
“Which accommodation?”
Vanessa listed:
no public correction,
no board work,
no red ink.
Rachel handed her the official plan.
“Show me.”
Vanessa stared.
None existed.
Then:
“The psychologist recommended them.”
Rachel answered:
“Then please provide the signed recommendation and school approval.”
Vanessa had emails.
Not formal plan changes.
Again:
pressure had become practice without becoming policy.
Rachel did not argue further.
“Submit the request.”
Vanessa left furious.
For the first time, she had been forced to distinguish:
what she wanted,
what a doctor suggested,
May you like
what the school formally approved,
and what the law actually required.
