Chapter 7 - MICHAEL COLE
Rachel finally met Noah’s father.
Michael Cole arrived without lawyers.
Plain navy sweater.
Tired face.
He asked:
“Is my son actually afraid of me?”
Rachel answered carefully.
“I can’t make that determination for custody court.”
He nodded.
“Good.”
Then:
“What can you tell me?”
“Noah reports stress around transitions and conflict between parents.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“That means us.”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
Then admitted his own failures.
He sometimes interrogated Noah after visits.
“What did Mom say about me?”
“Who was at the house?”
“Did she talk to her attorney?”
He hated himself for that.
Rachel said:
“Both parents are asking him to carry information.”
Michael nodded.
Then:
“Vanessa says she’s protecting him.”
“Maybe she believes that.”
He laughed bitterly.
“That’s worse.”
Not necessarily.
But Rachel understood.
Vanessa’s certainty made compromise difficult.
Then Michael revealed something important.
In court, Vanessa was asking for:
primary physical custody,
sole educational decision-making,
and authority over mental-health treatment.
If she won educational authority, she could choose:
evaluators,
therapy providers,
and school accommodations
without Michael’s agreement.
