Chapter 6 - THE AFFAIR

Claire had suspected Mark was distant.

Not that he had another woman.

Jessica had been inside the mansion six times.

Always introduced as:

broker,

project consultant,

investment contact.

Claire had served her coffee.

Once, while seven months pregnant, Claire asked Jessica whether Mark seemed stressed.

Jessica said:

“Men hate feeling powerless.”

Claire thought she meant business.

Now the sentence meant something else.

The affair mattered emotionally.

Legally, less than Claire wanted.

Grace told her:

“Adultery can matter in divorce depending on claims. It does not automatically void contracts.”

Claire looked furious.

“So what does?”

“Lack of authority. Fraud. Undisclosed conflicts. Coercion. False filings.”

Evidence.

Not humiliation.

Claire asked the question she had been avoiding.

“When did you start sleeping with her?”

Mark looked at Lauren.

Lauren said:

“You are not required to answer that in this meeting.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Jessica answered anyway.

“Eight months ago.”

Claire was seven months pregnant.

The math cut deeper than the affair itself.

Mark said:

“It started before we knew about the baby.”

Claire looked at him.

“You knew I wanted another child.”

“That is not the same.”

“No.”

She nodded.

“Worse.”

Grace later warned Claire not to let affair evidence swallow the property case.

Mark’s adultery explained betrayal.

It did not prove forgery.

Jessica’s relationship explained conflict.

It did not by itself prove she knew every false statement.

Claire wanted one story.

The law kept making her separate them.

That discipline eventually helped.

Claire began to understand the difference between revenge she imagined and relief she could actually secure.

She wanted:

Mark exposed,

Jessica humiliated,

the sale dead.

Grace wanted:

title protected,

accounts frozen,

evidence preserved,

Claire safe.

Those goals overlapped.

Not perfectly.
