Chapter 7 - THE FORGED AFFIDAVIT
The seller affidavit was the most dangerous document.
It stated:
Claire Donovan acknowledges that the mansion, despite trust title, has been treated throughout marriage as marital property and authorizes Mark Hayes to negotiate disposition on behalf of the marital household.
Signature:
Claire Donovan.
Claire stared.
“I didn’t sign this.”
Mark said:
“You signed a version.”
Grace requested metadata.
The PDF was created from an older renovation authorization Claire had signed two years earlier.
Her signature had been lifted.
Placed onto a new page.
Not a perfect handwritten forgery.
A digital reuse.
Mark’s defense shifted.
He said:
“I told Jessica Claire had already authorized the sale process.”
Jessica said:
“Mark gave me the signed affidavit.”
Lauren interrupted.
“My client is not admitting he altered a signature.”
Grace asked:
“Then who did?”
Silence.
Digital forensics showed the file was created on a laptop registered to Hayes Property Development.
User profile:
M.Hayes.
Mark said employees used the machine.
Possible.
Then the document properties showed the author field:
MARK.
Not enough alone.
Then Cole found an email.
MARK TO JESSICA:
Use the signature page from renovation packet. We don’t have time to chase Claire while she’s emotional.
Jessica replied:
Is that valid?
Mark:
Same property. Same marriage. She already agreed in substance.
That sentence destroyed the “unknown employee” defense.
Digital forensics found more than the signature file.
Mark’s laptop contained a folder:
EXIT STRATEGY.
Inside:
sale timeline,
estimated net proceeds,
Hayes Property debt payoff,
temporary apartment options,
and one spreadsheet labeled:
CLAIRE PUSHBACK.
Columns:
objection,
response,
pressure point.
One row:
CLAIRE SAYS TRUST OWNS HOUSE.
Response:
MARITAL CONTRIBUTION / FAIRNESS / OUR HOME LANGUAGE.
Another:
CLAIRE CALLS BROTHERS.
Response:
GET SIGNATURE BEFORE THEY REVIEW.
Another:
CLAIRE REFUSES.
Pressure point:
PREGNANCY / STABILITY / THREAT OF SEPARATION.
Claire stared at that word.
Pregnancy.
Mark said:
“It was negotiation planning.”
Grace asked:
“You categorized your pregnant wife’s emotional vulnerability as a pressure point?”
Mark looked away.
That file transformed the hallway from a spontaneous argument into the final stage of a prepared coercion strategy.
Not because he planned to hit Claire.
No document said that.

But he planned pressure.
And when paperwork failed, pressure escalated.
