Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT GRANT CHANGED HIS STORY

Police interviewed Grant again after the audio cache surfaced.

His first statement:

Emily became dizzy and fell.

Second:

They were arguing, she stepped backward, and he tried to catch her.

Third:

He may have pushed her shoulder away when she struck his chest.

There.

A push.

Small admission.

Grant’s lawyer explained it as defensive contact.

Emily had become angry.

She had shoved him first.

Grant moved her away.

She lost balance.

Possible.

Emily remembered striking his chest.

Not hard.

But yes.

She told Sarah.

Sarah did not look disappointed.

“Good.”

“Good?”

“Truth is useful.”

Emily stared.

“I hit him.”

“You pushed his chest during an argument.”

“Yes.”

“That does not give him permission to throw you toward a window.”

“No.”

“Then stop helping him by acting like your case requires sainthood.”

Emily laughed softly.

Different words.

Same lesson.

The prosecutor did not file attempted murder.

There was no proof of intent to kill.

Instead:

Aggravated assault investigation.

Domestic violence enhancement possible.

Grant’s public statement called it a tragic marital struggle.

Emily hated the phrase.

Yet it was closer to reality than murder.

He had shoved.

She had fallen.

He had called 911.

He had then tried to control the story.

Complex guilt.

Still guilt.

Then forensic review of Grant’s phone produced a message sent to Marcus Bell thirty minutes before the argument.

If Emily blocks tomorrow, we may need continuity route.

Marcus replied:

Only if she is unavailable or medically impaired.

Grant:

Understood.

Emily stared at the timestamp.

He had been thinking about incapacity before he came upstairs.

That did not prove he planned violence.

It proved where his mind was.

If Emily could not be persuaded, the system needed another path.

Then came the question nobody could answer:

When he shoved her, had he seen the window behind her?

Emily believed yes.

Grant said no.

May you like

The law would have to decide what it could.

Emily no longer needed certainty to know she was leaving.
