Chapter 14 - THE PENTHOUSE WINDOW

The penthouse sold.
Emily returned once before closing.
The repaired bedroom window looked ordinary.
That annoyed her.
She expected places to remember.
They rarely do.
Sarah came with her because evidence from Grant’s belongings still had to be inventoried.
In his jewelry drawer, Emily found the matching gold cufflink.
One intact.
The other remained in police evidence.
She held it in her palm.
Heavy.
Gold.
Initials engraved on the back.
G.M.
Grant loved those cufflinks.
Emily had given them to him on their fifth anniversary.
She remembered the dinner.
The wine.
The way he smiled.
Good memories did not become fake because later ones were terrible.
That was another truth she had learned to tolerate.
Sarah asked:
“You want it?”
“No.”
Emily placed it in an evidence envelope.
“Both belong together.”
She looked at the window.
Then closed it.
May you like
Locked it.
And walked away.
