Chapter 6 - THE PACKAGE PREPARED BEFORE THE FALL
The most damaging document did not come from the penthouse.
It came from Grant’s office.
Sarah subpoenaed continuity files related to the Mercer trust.
One folder was dated eleven days before Emily’s fall.
TEMPORARY INCAPACITY OPTIONS.
Inside:
Draft guardianship petition.
Medical-release forms.
Trust proxy activation notice.
Board communication announcing Grant would exercise Emily’s voting authority if she became unavailable.
Emily stared.
“He prepared all of this.”
Grant’s lawyer said contingency planning was normal.
That was not absurd.
The Dalton closing deadline was close.
Emily had upcoming surgery consultations.
Grant knew she might be hospitalized for unrelated health reasons.
He argued responsible executives plan for uncertainty.
Sarah asked:
“Why was the draft guardianship petition already written?”
“Because delay could cost the company the transaction.”
“Why did it describe Emily as unable to evaluate complex financial matters?”
Grant paused.
“Because that was the legal standard counsel suggested.”
“Before any incapacity existed.”
“Yes.”
Emily felt cold.
Grant had built the road before the accident.
Maybe he had not planned the shove.
Maybe he had.
The court did not need to guess yet.
The judge denied Grant immediate guardianship.
Instead, an independent temporary trustee would hold Emily’s vote until she was medically cleared.
Grant had expected to win.
His face barely changed.
But Emily knew him.
He was furious.
Then he did something smart.
He publicly supported the ruling.
“I want what is best for Emily and the company.”
The press loved it.
A devoted husband.
A tragic accident.
A complicated business dispute.
Emily watched the coverage from the hospital.
Sarah muted the television.
“He is controlling the frame.”
Emily looked at her bruised face in the black screen.
“Then we change the frame.”
“How?”
“Not with the fall.”
