Chapter 5 - THE CAMERA HE TURNED OFF
Daniel Mercer from hospital security had no relation to Grant.
Emily found that almost funny.
He reviewed the penthouse smart-home logs at Sarah’s request after Emily obtained emergency access to her own residence system.
The bedroom camera had been disabled at 9:42 p.m.
The fall occurred around 9:54.
User:
GRANT ADMIN.
Sarah looked at Emily.
“He turned it off.”
Emily’s heart pounded.
Then she remembered.
Grant entering the bedroom.
Closing the laptop downstairs.
Following her.
“Why would he turn it off?”
Grant’s answer arrived before court:
Privacy.
He and his wife were arguing.
He disabled an interior camera because intimate marital conversations should not be recorded.
Plausible.
Again.
The window sensor remained active.
At 9:51, window position changed from forty percent to seventy-eight percent.
At 9:54, impact alarm.
At 9:55, emergency call from Grant’s phone.
He had called 911.
That helped him.
He did not leave her.
Did not stage a delay.
Did not hide her body.
He called for help immediately.
Sarah looked at the timeline.
“This is why he may think he can win.”
Emily whispered:
“Maybe he didn’t mean for me to go out.”
Sarah looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
“He shoved me.”
“Yes.”
“But maybe he didn’t mean window.”
That truth made everything harder.
Intent mattered.
Grant may have attacked her without intending to kill her.
Emily did not need to exaggerate.
“He shoved me because I said no.”
Sarah nodded.
“That is enough to say.”
Then Daniel from security found an automated audio cache.
The system saved ten seconds whenever the window impact alarm triggered.
Not enough for the shove.
Only voices.
Emily:
“Grant, please. I said no.”
Grant:
“You don’t get to destroy everything because you’re scared.”
Then impact.
Silence.
Grant’s attorney responded immediately.
The words referred to the redevelopment vote.
Not physical control.
True.
The recording proved an argument.
Not assault.
Still, it mattered.
