Chapter 1 - THE PHOTOGRAPH

Margaret Bennett did not walk into the wedding reception.
She stormed through it.
Guests turned.
Glasses stopped halfway to mouths.
Music kept playing for two confused seconds before someone killed it.
Claire Bennett, still holding her bouquet, barely had time to say:
“Mom?”
Margaret grabbed her arm.
Then slapped her across the face.
“YOU FOOL!”
Claire recoiled.
The bouquet shook in her hand.
Ethan Bennett stepped between them immediately.
“What the hell are you doing?!”
Margaret shoved past him.
Her hands were trembling.
She ripped an old photograph from her handbag and thrust it toward Claire.
“LOOK AT THIS!”
Claire snatched it.
The picture was faded.
Late summer.
A younger Margaret stood beside a man Claire did not recognize.
He had one arm around her.
Margaret held an infant.
The man held another small child against his chest.
Claire stared.
“Who is he?”
Margaret pointed toward Ethan.
Ethan grabbed the photograph.
Looked once.
Then again.
His face lost color.
“That’s… my father.”
Claire whipped toward him.
Margaret pointed violently at the children in the photograph.
“LOOK AT THE BABIES!”
Claire’s eyes widened.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Margaret screamed:
“YOU’RE BROTHER AND SISTER!”
Claire’s bouquet fell.
White flowers scattered across the floor.
“No.”
Margaret’s face collapsed.
“I should have told you years ago.”
Ethan stared at Claire.
“What is she talking about?”
Claire staggered backward.
Then both hands went to her stomach.
Ethan saw.
“Claire…?”
Her eyes filled.
She shook her head.
“No… no…”
Margaret froze.
For the first time since entering the hall, she stopped moving.
Ethan looked at Claire’s hands.
Then at her face.
“You’re pregnant?”
Claire could not answer.
That silence answered him.
The reception hall erupted in whispers.
Claire turned toward the guests.
Then toward Ethan.
Then toward the old photograph.
She had expected the worst thing that could happen at her wedding to be humiliation.
She was wrong.

The worst thing was not knowing whether her mother had just destroyed her life with the truth—
or with another lie.
