One document escaped destruction.
Not in a law office.
Not in a bank.
In Ethan’s grandmother’s attic.
Susan found it inside David’s old military footlocker.
Envelope:
FOR MARGARET — IF I DON'T GET THE CHANCE.
Never mailed.
The letter was dated twelve years after Claire’s birth.
David wrote that he had seen Claire from a distance at a school performance.
He said she looked like his mother.
He wrote:
I have paid for what I can without entering her life and breaking two families.
Then:
I keep telling myself absence is the least selfish choice.
And:
If she ever learns who I am, she will have every right to hate me.
Claire read the letter alone.
No one filmed her.
No dramatic confrontation.
She folded it.
Then unfolded it.
David had known.
He had watched.
He had chosen silence repeatedly.
That hurt differently from Margaret.
