The ceremony had occurred.
License formalities were incomplete.
Counsel concluded the marriage had not been fully recorded and could be prevented from final registration.
If it had been completed, annulment procedures would likely apply because prohibited degrees of kinship made the marriage legally invalid in their jurisdiction.
No one celebrated that technicality.
The ceremony status also created an administrative absurdity.
The caterer had already charged the final wedding balance.
The florist wanted payment.
The photographer had photographed everything.
The honeymoon was nonrefundable.

Claire and Ethan spent one afternoon dividing wedding losses.

Claire stared at the spreadsheet.
“This is insane.”
Ethan said:
“I know.”
Then they both laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because arguing about a cake invoice after discovering shared paternity was so absurd the brain rejected normal seriousness.
They split costs according to who had originally paid.
No one tried to weaponize the wedding money.
That practical fairness helped preserve some human connection after romance ended.
Claire said:
“So the law can erase the marriage.”
Grace answered:
“It can determine legal status.”
“Same thing.”
“No.”
Claire understood.
The law could say they were never valid spouses.
It could not erase:
six years together,
the proposal,
the home,
the plans,
the baby.
Ethan moved out of their shared apartment.
Claire stayed temporarily with a friend.
They divided practical things carefully.
Joint account.
Lease.
Wedding gifts.
Deposits.
No revenge.
No one had deceived the other.
