Chapter 3 - THEN CRAWL OUT

Richard arrived forty minutes later.

He did not come alone.

A junior associate carried a document scanner.

A process server waited in the driveway.

Richard entered the bedroom, took one look at Sarah’s condition, and became very quiet.

That was more frightening than anger.

“What happened?”

Sarah explained the papers.

Richard reviewed them.

His mouth tightened.

“This disclaimer would have concealed prior trust transactions.”

Robert folded his arms.

“That is speculation.”

Richard looked at him.

“No. The waiver language is unusually broad.”

Linda scoffed.

“You lawyers make everything sound criminal.”

Richard turned to Sarah.

“Did you know there are three mortgages on this house?”

Sarah stared.

“What?”

“Total principal: 1.6 million.”

Robert said:

“Maintenance.”

Richard looked at him.

“On a house appraised at 2.3 million?”

Robert’s calmness remained.

“Renovations. Taxes. Family needs.”

Richard opened another document.

“Two mortgage proceeds went to Bennett Lifestyle Holdings.”

Jessica’s face changed.

Sarah noticed.

“What is Bennett Lifestyle?”

Nobody answered.

Richard looked at Jessica.

“Your boutique company.”

Sarah stared at her sister.

Jessica said:

“It was an investment.”

“With my house?”

“Our family house.”

“No,” Richard said. “Legally, Sarah’s beneficial property.”

Linda snapped:

“Enough.”

Richard turned.

“No. We’re just starting.”

That was when Linda exploded.

Maybe it was fear.

Maybe humiliation.

Maybe years of resentment finding an excuse.

She crossed the room.

“Get up.”

Sarah stared.

“Mom.”

“I said get out.”

“Sarah is not moving,” Adam said.

Linda grabbed Sarah by the hair.

Sarah screamed.

Ellie woke crying.

Sarah clutched the baby against her chest.

Linda yanked her off the bed.

Sarah collapsed to her knees.

Pain tore across her abdomen.

“I had surgery yesterday!”

Linda grabbed her arm.

“Then crawl out!”

Adam moved.

Robert stepped in front of him.

“Don’t touch my wife.”

Adam stared at him.

“Get out of my way.”

Jessica stood holding Noah, watching.

Smug.

“Quit whining,” she said. “Nobody wants you here.”

Linda dragged Sarah across the floor.

Sarah cried out.

Then Richard moved faster than anyone expected.

He shoved Linda away from Sarah.

“Take your hands off her!”

Linda stumbled backward.

Adam dropped beside Sarah.

“Sarah?”

She could barely answer.

Richard stepped between her and Linda.

He slammed the legal folder onto the table.

“You’re looking at ten years in prison.”

Linda went pale.

Robert said sharply:

“Richard.”

Richard ignored him.

He pointed to Sarah.

“Get on your knees.”

Linda stared.

“And beg your daughter for mercy.”

Linda’s mouth opened.

Then Robert laughed.

Richard turned slowly.

Robert’s eyes were cold.

“You think assault is our biggest problem?”

Richard said nothing.

Robert stepped toward the folder.

“You should check who owns your client’s company before you threaten my wife.”

Adam froze.

Sarah looked at him.

“What is he talking about?”

May you like

Robert smiled.

And for the first time, Adam looked afraid.
