Chapter 7 - LINDA'S DEBT

Linda had been gambling.

Not casinos.

Not sports.

Private investment clubs.

High-risk real estate pools.

A friend introduced her to a “guaranteed return” opportunity eight years earlier.

It collapsed.

Linda lost nearly three million dollars.

Some of it was hers.

Most was not.

Robert covered the losses by borrowing against the trust house.

Then he created Bennett Lifestyle Holdings to disguise the transfers.

Jessica’s boutique became a useful destination.

A legitimate-looking business to route money through.

Sarah stared at Richard.

“So Mom caused this?”

“Partly.”

“Did Dad know?”

“Eventually.”

Jessica shook her head.

“He knew from the beginning.”

Sarah turned.

Jessica explained.

Linda confessed the first loss at $400,000.

Robert could have stopped her.

Instead, he borrowed to cover it.

Then encouraged Linda to keep investing so they might recover.

They chased losses.

Every new mortgage was supposed to repair the previous one.

“Why would Dad do that?” Sarah asked.

Jessica answered:

“Because he couldn’t let Grandma’s friends find out.”

Evelyn had built the family’s reputation around prudence.

Robert served on nonprofit boards.

Managed estates.

Advised wealthy retirees.

If people learned his wife had gambled away trust-backed funds, his career would collapse.

So he buried it.

Again and again.

Sarah understood the motive.

Not greed alone.

Shame.

Reputation.

Control.

The most dangerous thing about Robert was that he could explain every crime as damage containment.

Richard said:

“Now we have motive for the mortgages.”

Sarah asked:

“Does it help us?”

“Yes. If we can prove trust funds covered Linda’s personal losses.”

Jessica had evidence.

Old emails.

Linda begging Robert:

PLEASE FIX THIS BEFORE SARAH EVER FINDS OUT.

Another:

IF SHE HAS A BABY BEFORE WE REPLACE THE MONEY, WE'RE FINISHED.

Sarah stared.

They had been planning around Ellie before she was conceived.

Then one email stopped Richard.

Robert to Linda:

IF SARAH'S FIRST PREGNANCY HAD CONTINUED, WE WOULD HAVE LOST CONTROL LAST YEAR.

Sarah felt the room tilt.

Her miscarriage.

Robert had known the trust would transfer if that child survived.

Adam noticed her face.

“Sarah.”

She could barely speak.

“Dad knew.”

Richard read further.

Another email.

Linda:

I KNOW. DON'T SAY IT LIKE THAT.

Robert:

I'M NOT SAYING I CAUSED ANYTHING.

Silence.

Sarah looked at Richard.

“What does that mean?”

“No idea.”

Her heart began racing.

Adam stepped closer.

Sarah whispered:

“Did they do something?”

“No evidence,” Richard said immediately.

“But why write that?”

Richard looked grim.

“Because something happened they were afraid could be interpreted that way.”

Jessica went pale.

Sarah turned.

“What do you know?”

May you like

Jessica looked at the floor.

“Mom was with you the night you miscarried.”
