Chapter 9 - THE MAN AT THE HOSPITAL

Robert denied being there.
Then Richard showed him the image.
Robert’s expression barely changed.
“That could be anyone.”
“It’s you.”
“No.”
Richard obtained the original footage.
It was Robert.
He had entered through a side entrance.
He left before Adam arrived.
Sarah confronted him through counsel.
Finally, Robert admitted it.
“Linda called me earlier.”
“Why did you lie?”
“Because I knew how it would look.”
Sarah stared.
“How would it look?”
“Like we cared more about the trust than the baby.”
“Did you?”
Robert’s face hardened.
“That is insulting.”
“Answer.”
“I cared about both.”
Sarah laughed bitterly.
Of course.
Both.
Always both.
Love and money.
Protection and control.
He never separated them.
Richard asked about the tea.
Robert claimed he did not know Linda had added anything.
Then he said something unexpected.
“Linda thought Sarah was trying to end the pregnancy herself.”
Sarah froze.
“What?”
Robert produced old text messages.
Sarah to Linda:
I CAN'T DO THIS.
I'M SCARED.
I WISH I COULD MAKE IT ALL STOP.
Sarah remembered.
She had been overwhelmed.
Terrified she would be a bad mother.
She had never meant she wanted to end the pregnancy.
Robert knew that.
But he used the ambiguity.
Again.
He continued:
“Linda gave her a calming herbal mixture because she thought Sarah was panicking.”
Richard asked:
“What was in it?”
Robert shrugged.
“Ask Linda.”
Then Robert counterattacked.
He filed a defamation claim against Adam.
He alleged Adam told business partners Robert and Linda caused Sarah’s miscarriage.
Adam denied it.
But one employee had repeated the rumor.
Robert’s goal was not to win.
It was to increase pressure.
Legal fees.
Business uncertainty.
Embarrassment.
At the same time, Bennett Capital formally called Adam’s loan.
Four million due in thirty days.
Sarah stared at the notice.
Adam’s company could not pay.
Richard said:
“We can seek an injunction.”
“Will we get it?”
“Maybe.”
Sarah looked at Adam.
He looked exhausted.
She suddenly hated how every choice hurt someone else.
Robert called that evening.
Sarah answered.
His voice was calm.
“Take the settlement.”
“No.”
“Your husband loses his company.”
“That’s your choice.”
“No. It’s yours.”
There it was.
Robert’s philosophy in one sentence.
He created traps.
Then made other people feel responsible for stepping into them.
Sarah said:
“You trained this family to confuse consequences with guilt.”
Robert went silent.
Then:
“You sound like Evelyn.”
Sarah frowned.
“Grandma?”
“She said something similar before she died.”
“What?”
Robert laughed softly.
“You think the trust was created to protect you from me.”
“Wasn’t it?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
May you like
A pause.
“To protect the house from Linda.”
