Chapter 11 - THE LEGAL CONSEQUENCES
Toby had been kicked.
Clara had been physically restrained at the jaw.
Those acts mattered separately from the care plan.
Police documented:
Toby physically unharmed,
Clara with mild jaw tenderness,
no serious injury,
and witnesses limited mostly to the family.
Andrew saw the end of the incident.
Toby described the kick in age-appropriate interview.
Evelyn admitted pushing Toby away with her foot.
She denied intending harm.
Her attorney argued:
he was striking her leg,
she reacted,
no injury occurred.
Reasonable context.
The prosecutor did not call it attempted murder or aggravated fantasy violence.
The case resolved proportionately.
Probation.
Anger-management and family-boundary intervention.
No unsupervised contact with Toby for an initial period.
No entry into Andrew and Clara’s home without permission.
Clara did not ask for prison.
She said:
“I want her to understand that helping us is not a right.”
Andrew also had to face his own act.
He had shouted.
Slapped the table.
Threatened to “cut Mom off forever.”
Therapy helped him separate anger from governance.
He and Rebecca changed trust procedures:
receipts submitted directly to trustees,
no informal family administrator,
no one person controlling household reimbursements.
The solution was structure.
Andrew’s employer also became part of the solution.
He had been working twelve-hour days because a product launch was failing.
He assumed family would absorb the cost temporarily.
When he explained enough to his manager, she said:
“Why didn’t you ask for family leave earlier?”
Andrew had no answer.
He believed needing leave would make him look unreliable.
So he let Clara rely on Evelyn instead.
Another hidden trade.
Professional pride moved domestic pressure onto someone else.
He reduced his travel for six weeks.
Not forever.
Not abandoning his career.
Just acknowledging birth and recovery were temporary high-demand periods.
Clara noticed the difference.
Presence did not solve everything.
