Chapter 6 - THE INCIDENT LOG

The first entry:

Day 4 of third trimester monitoring:

Clara cried after argument regarding nursery curtains.

Second:

Refused breakfast protein.

Third:

Left laundry unfolded overnight.

Fourth:

Raised voice when advised to rest.

Fifth:

Allowed Toby screen time during quiet hour.

Andrew kept reading.

Normal life had been turned into pathology.

One entry hurt more.

Clara stated: “I can’t do this again.”

Context:

2:20 a.m.

Toby had fever.

Clara eight months pregnant.

Andrew away overnight for work.

Evelyn’s note:

Potential anticipatory maternal distress regarding newborn.

Andrew called Clara.

“Did you say that?”

“Yes.”

“What did you mean?”

“That I couldn’t do another night alone while Toby was sick and you were in Dallas.”

He closed his eyes.

Of course.

Another entry:

Clara forgot prenatal vitamin.

Potential compliance issue.

Another:

Clara requested Evelyn leave bedroom.

Resistance to support.

The log did not contain lies exactly.

It contained interpretation.

That made it more dangerous.

Andrew’s sister Rebecca came over to read it.

She worked as a school psychologist.

Not Clara’s clinician.

Still trained enough to recognize framing.

“This isn’t assessment.”

“What is it?”

“A narrative.”

She tapped the pages.

“Every behavior points in one direction because Mom decided the conclusion first.”

Andrew asked:

“Could this hurt Clara legally?”

“By itself? It’s just Mom’s notes.”

“Then why make it?”

Rebecca looked at him.

“To persuade you.”

That answer landed.

Evelyn did not need a judge.

She needed Andrew.
