Chapter 4 - EVELYN'S VERSION

Evelyn did not deny the routine.
She defended it.
“Clara is overwhelmed.”
Andrew stood in the kitchen.
Toby stayed with Clara’s sister for the night.
The house felt too quiet.
“Who asked you to make a schedule?”
“No one had to.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“You’re never here.”
Andrew flinched.
Evelyn continued.
“She skips meals.”
“She said you restricted them.”
“She eats junk.”
“She said you take her phone.”
“She needs sleep.”
“You lock it in a drawer.”
“I remove stimulation.”
Andrew stared.
“What are you, a hospital?”
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
“I raised three children.”
“And Clara is not one of them.”
“She is carrying my grandchild.”
There.
Andrew heard the ownership inside the sentence.
“My grandchild.”
Not:
your wife’s body.
Not:
your wife’s medical care.
Evelyn continued:
“She is weak.”
“She is pregnant.”
“She is dramatic.”
“She fainted.”
“Exactly.”
Andrew stared.
Then realized Evelyn had arranged the evidence so any outcome supported her.
Clara rested?
She was fragile.
Clara protested?
She was emotional.
Clara cried?
She was unstable.
Clara fainted?
Proof she could not manage herself.
No behavior could disprove the conclusion.
Andrew asked:
“What are you trying to prove?”
Evelyn looked away.
That was the first crack.
Then Andrew noticed a folder on the dining table.
White.
Tabbed.
CARTER FAMILY POST-BIRTH CARE PLAN.
He reached for it.
May you like
Evelyn moved first.
Too late.
