Chapter 2 - THE AIRPORT VERSION

Linda said Mia had thrown a tantrum.

She said the child kicked her.

Screamed.

Hit a lamp.

Tried to run downstairs.

“I put her in the bedroom to calm down.”

Andrew stared at the broken door.

“You locked it.”

“For safety.”

“And left the house.”

“My flight was moved.”

Paula laughed from across the room.

Linda heard it.

“There she is.”

Paula took the phone.

“You slapped my daughter.”

“I tapped her cheek because she was hysterical.”

“You shoved her into a room.”

“She ran in.”

“You locked the door.”

“So she wouldn’t hurt herself.”

“You drove to the airport.”

Linda’s voice sharpened.

“You were supposed to be home.”

Paula looked at Andrew.

They had texted Linda that lunch was running forty-five minutes late.

Linda had replied:

No problem. Take your time.

Paula opened the thread.

There it was.

Timestamped.

Linda continued:

“I assumed you were almost there.”

Andrew took the phone back.

“Mom. You told us to take our time.”

Silence.

Then Linda said:

“You always believe her.”

Andrew’s face changed.

“This isn’t about Paula.”

“It is always about Paula.”

There.

Old resentment.

Then:

“She has been trying to push me out of Mia’s life for years.”

Paula stared.

Linda was not defending what happened.

She was repositioning it.

From:

I locked a three-year-old alone.

To:

Paula is isolating the family.

May you like

Andrew hung up.

For the first time in his life, he did not say goodbye to his mother.
