Chapter 14 - THE BOARDROOM

The Caldwell board meeting began at nine.
Marjorie entered expecting victory.
She had the votes to remove Grant.
She had enough shareholders prepared to force Claire’s shares into temporary trusteeship.
She had public sympathy.
She had spent decades building relationships no scandal could erase in a week.
Claire arrived at 9:07.
Marjorie smiled.
“You’re late.”
Claire sat across from her.
“No. I wanted you to start without me.”
The board chairman frowned.
Claire placed a folder on the table.
Marjorie did not look at it.
“Another performance?”
Claire shook her head.
“A resignation.”
Grant stared.
Marjorie smiled.
“Yours?”
“No.”
Claire slid the paper toward Grant.
He opened it.
Marjorie Caldwell — resignation from Caldwell Holdings board and all fiduciary positions.
Marjorie laughed.
“You cannot force me to sign that.”
“I don’t need to.”
Claire nodded toward the door.
Camille entered with federal agents.
The room erupted.
Marjorie’s face remained composed.
“Camille.”
Camille sat beside Claire.
For the first time in the story of their family, mother and daughter faced each other without pretending.
Marjorie spoke first.
“You think they’ll protect you?”
Camille’s voice was quiet.
“No.”
“Then why betray your family?”
Camille flinched.
Marjorie pressed harder.
“I gave you a life. I protected your brother. I cleaned up every disaster you created.”
Camille placed the old accident file on the table.
“No. You created the disaster.”
Marjorie’s eyes flickered.
Only once.
But Claire saw it.
Camille continued.
“My brother went to prison for you.”
The board members began whispering.
Marjorie turned to Claire.
“You think this makes your father innocent?”
“No.”
That answer surprised everyone.
Claire stood.
“My father was ambitious. He used Henry’s scandal to take control of the company. He made choices that hurt people.”
Marjorie’s expression changed.
Claire continued.
“But his flaws do not erase your crimes.”
Silence.
“You stole from the company. You blackmailed your daughter. You framed me. You manipulated Grant. And when my father threatened to expose you, you told Camille to stop him.”
Marjorie rose.
“I told her to delay him.”
Camille’s voice shook.
“You knew I was going to damage the brakes.”
Marjorie turned.
“You made your own choice.”
“You told me consequences belonged to him.”
“Because they did!”
Marjorie’s voice cracked through the room.
Everyone froze.
She realized too late.
Claire looked toward Rebecca.
The meeting was being legally recorded.
Marjorie recovered.
“That proves nothing.”
Claire nodded.
“You’re right.”
Marjorie frowned.
Claire slid one final item across the table.
A repair invoice from Daniel’s mechanic.
The brake line had been replaced with a defective aftermarket component two days before the crash.
Marjorie stared.
Claire said:
“Camille cut the emergency brake cable.”
Camille looked confused.
Claire continued.
“But that didn’t cause the crash.”
Grant leaned forward.
Claire looked at Marjorie.
“The main brake line failed because someone swapped it before Camille ever touched the car.”
Marjorie said nothing.
“And only one person had Daniel’s spare key.”
The room went silent.

Claire turned toward Grant.
His face drained of color.
