Chapter 9 - HENRY’S SECRET

The envelope contained a DNA report.

Claire read it twice.

Then a third time.

Henry Caldwell was not Grant’s biological father.

Daniel Whitmore was.

Claire looked up slowly.

Grant was staring at the floor.

“No.”

“It’s true.”

“No.”

“My mother had an affair with your father before either of us was born.”

Claire’s mind refused to organize the words.

“That would make you…”

“Your half-brother?”

Grant laughed bitterly.

“No. The report isn’t mine.”

Claire stared.

“It’s Camille’s.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Grant explained.

Marjorie had given birth to a daughter at twenty-one and placed the baby for adoption before marrying Henry. Years later, she found the child.

Camille.

Daniel was Camille’s biological father.

Claire closed her eyes.

Camille was her half-sister.

Marjorie’s daughter.

Suddenly the cruelty at Christmas took on another shape.

“She belongs here. You don’t.”

Claire whispered the words.

Grant nodded.

“My mother wasn’t talking about the chair.”

“She was talking about blood.”

“Yes.”

Claire felt sick.

“Why hide Camille?”

“Henry never knew. Marjorie believed the truth would destroy her position in his family. After Henry died, she brought Camille back quietly.”

“And blackmailed her?”

Grant looked away.

“Camille hated her.”

“Then why help her?”

“Because Marjorie told Camille that Daniel abandoned them both.”

Claire unfolded another paper.

A letter from Daniel.

He had never known about the pregnancy.

Marjorie had hidden it.

Daniel discovered Camille’s identity only six months before the crash.

Then he tried to contact her.

Claire remembered Camille saying Daniel had offered to help.

“He wanted to expose Marjorie.”

“Yes.”

“For stealing?”

“For everything.”

Grant sat heavily.

“My mother spent her entire adult life rewriting what happened with Henry. She convinced herself Daniel destroyed him.”

“Daniel exposed a criminal.”

“Henry was guilty,” Grant said. “But my mother never cared about guilt. She cared that Daniel chose truth over loyalty.”

Claire looked at him.

“And the thirty-eight million?”

Grant’s face darkened.

“Revenge.”

Marjorie had slowly drained assets from the merged Whitmore-Caldwell company into shell corporations.

Not simply to enrich herself.

To destroy Daniel’s legacy using his own company.

She planned to acquire Claire’s shares, force insolvency, then sell the remaining assets to a private fund controlled through proxies.

“Dad found out.”

“Yes.”

“And she killed him.”

Grant shook his head.

“I still don’t know that.”

Claire laughed in disbelief.

“How can you keep defending her?”

“I’m not.”

“Then what are you doing?”

Grant looked at her.

“Trying to survive her.”

Before Claire could answer, the study door opened.

Marjorie stood there.

She had heard enough.

But she was not angry.

She was smiling.

“Finally,” she said. “We can stop pretending.”
