Chapter 2 - THE SAFE

Claire did not sleep.

At two in the morning, after Grant finally came upstairs smelling faintly of Camille’s perfume, Claire pretended to be asleep until his breathing slowed.

Then she left.

Her father’s house had been empty since the funeral.

She unlocked the front door and stepped into darkness.

Nothing had changed.

His shoes were still under the bench. His reading glasses still rested beside the armchair. Claire nearly turned around.

Instead, she went to his study.

The safe was behind a framed photograph of Claire at seventeen, standing beside her father after winning a debate tournament. Daniel had insisted that arguments mattered only when evidence survived emotion.

Claire entered the code she knew.

The safe opened.

Inside were property deeds, insurance papers, and a sealed envelope marked with her name.

Her hands trembled.

She opened it.

Claire,

If you are reading this because something happened to me, do not trust appearances. Do not accuse anyone until you understand why.

There was no name.

No explanation.

Only a small brass key taped beneath the note and a storage-unit number written on the back.

Claire drove there before sunrise.

Unit 418 contained three boxes.

The first held financial records.

The second held printed emails between Daniel and an investigator named Thomas Reed.

The third held photographs.

Claire spread them across the concrete floor.

Marjorie meeting with a private security contractor.

Grant entering a downtown law office after midnight.

Camille having lunch with Daniel two weeks before his death.

Claire froze.

Camille?

Why had Camille met her father?

She searched the emails.

One line appeared repeatedly:

CALDWELL HOLDINGS — LEGACY ACCOUNT DISCREPANCIES.

Another:

DO NOT CONTACT CLAIRE UNTIL WE KNOW WHETHER GRANT IS INVOLVED.

Claire sat back.

Her husband.

Her father had suspected her husband.

A noise sounded outside the unit.

Footsteps.

Claire shoved the papers back into the box.

The footsteps stopped.

A shadow appeared under the door.

Then someone tried the handle.

Claire held her breath.

The lock rattled again.

A man’s voice spoke quietly from the other side.

“Mrs. Caldwell?”

Claire said nothing.

“I know you’re in there.”

She gripped the brass key between her fingers like a weapon.

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your father hired me.”

Claire opened the door only a few inches.

The man outside was in his late forties, gray coat, tired face.

“Thomas Reed?”

He nodded.

Claire nearly collapsed with relief.

Then Thomas looked over his shoulder.

“You shouldn’t have come here alone.”

“Why?”

“Because someone accessed this unit yesterday.”

Claire stared at him.

“Who?”

May you like

Thomas’s expression hardened.

“Your husband.”
