The application did not result in payment.
Important.
No completed insurance fraud payout.
But the statements mattered.
Diane described:
meal preparation,
bathing twins,
mobility assistance,
overnight supervision,
medication management.
Some were true occasionally.
Others exaggerated.
Overnight supervision?
Twice.
Medication management?
Elena managed her own prescriptions.
Bathing twins?
Grace did more.
Then the insurer had contacted Elena for confirmation.
Why did Elena never see it?
The email went to an old account Diane helped set up during the hospital stay.
Diane knew the password.
She marked the message read.
No response.
The claim stalled.
Then Daniel asked Diane through counsel:
“Why list forty hours?”
She answered:
“That’s what I gave emotionally.”
Daniel stared.
Forms do not measure emotional hours.
Then Diane said:
“I gave up my retirement.”
Records showed she had stopped fitness instruction two months before Elena’s crash because of a dispute with the gym owner.
She had not retired to help Elena.
The timeline disproved the core family story.
Then the gym owner confirmed:
Diane quit after her schedule was reduced.
She later told friends:
“I retired for my grandchildren.”
Identity renovation.
Again.
Then Elena understood why Diane was so furious whenever paid help appeared.
A nanny threatened more than control.
It threatened the story on which Diane’s social status rested.
The selfless grandmother.
The exhausted rescuer.
The woman sacrificing everything.
Then Elena’s therapist asked:
“Why did you need that story too?”
Elena stiffened.
“What?”
“You accepted help from someone who repeatedly made you feel guilty.”
Elena looked away.
Because after Marcus died, she wanted family.
Because being widowed with twins felt terrifying.
Because paying Diane made the relationship feel reciprocal.
Money gave Elena the illusion she could stabilize love.
That realization hurt.
She had not bought her mother.
But she had used financial support to avoid confronting what the relationship actually was.
