Chapter 17 - THE SECRET DIANE KEPT

Elena ended the party early without telling the children why.
Diane remained.
So did Sophie.
They sat around Elena's kitchen table after Grace took Leo and Maya upstairs.
Elena looked at her mother.
“You knew Marcus might have a daughter.”
Diane nodded.
“For how long?”
“Almost nine years before he died.”
Elena laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
“You knew before my wedding.”
“Yes.”
“And said nothing.”
“He asked me not to.”
The answer was so absurd Elena almost stood.
“You hated Marcus.”
“I didn't hate him.”
“You called him controlling.”
“He was controlling.”
“You criticized everything he did, but somehow this was the one thing you respected his privacy about?”
Diane flinched.
“That isn't fair.”
“No?”
Sophie interrupted.
“Maybe I should leave.”
Elena turned.
“No.”
The sharpness startled her.
Elena softened.
“No. You're already part of whatever this is.”
Diane explained.
Marcus had dated Valerie Reed when he was nineteen.
The relationship lasted less than a year.
After they separated, Valerie discovered she was pregnant.
Marcus believed the baby might be his.
Valerie refused a paternity test.
Why?
Diane claimed she did not know.
Marcus occasionally saw Sophie during her first two years.
Then Valerie moved.
Contact ended.
Years later, shortly before Marcus married Elena, Valerie contacted him again.
“She wanted money?” Elena asked.
Diane hesitated.
“Marcus thought so.”
Sophie stiffened.
“My mother said he abandoned us.”
“I wasn't there,” Diane replied. “I only know what Marcus told me.”
That distinction was new for Diane.
Elena noticed despite herself.
Daniel Cho arrived the next morning.
He reviewed the photograph and letter.
Then Elena asked:
“Did Marcus ever mention Sophie to you?”
“No.”
“What about his estate?”
Daniel hesitated.
That was enough.
“Daniel.”
“There was a sealed memorandum.”
Elena stared.
“What memorandum?”
“Marcus instructed me not to open it unless a specific condition occurred.”
“What condition?”
Daniel removed a file from his case.
“If someone named Sophie Reed contacted the estate.”
Nobody spoke.
Elena felt anger rising.
“My husband built a legal trapdoor into his estate and nobody told me?”
“It wasn't a trapdoor.”
“What was it?”
“A contingency.”
Daniel broke the seal.
Inside was a single-page instruction.
If Sophie Reed establishes contact after my death, Daniel is authorized to disclose the existence of Account SR-17.
Sophie stared.
“What is SR-17?”
Daniel's expression changed.
“I don't know.”
Elena almost laughed again.
“You administered his estate.”
“This account wasn't listed among the assets transferred to you.”
“Then where is it?”
Daniel searched the accompanying paperwork.
A bank identifier.
A trust reference.
A lawyer's name Elena had never heard.
Then he found something worse.
SR-17 had been opened seventeen years earlier.
Marcus had deposited money into it every month.
The final balance before his death:
$412,600.
Sophie covered her mouth.
“I told you I didn't come for money.”
Elena believed her.
For the moment.
Then Daniel read the beneficiary line.
He went silent.
Elena asked:
“What?”
“The beneficiary isn't Sophie.”
“Then who is it?”
Daniel turned the page toward them.
The beneficiary was listed only as:
THE BIOLOGICAL CHILD OF VALERIE REED AND THOMAS MORGAN.
Elena stared.
“Thomas?”
Diane went pale.
Marcus's older brother.
Dead for twenty-three years.
And according to everything Elena had ever been told—
May you like
Thomas Morgan never had children.
