Chapter 14 - THE FIRST VISIT

Two years after the kick, Diane requested supervised contact with Leo and Maya.

The twins were three.

They did not remember the incident consciously.

They knew Grandma Diane lived elsewhere.

Elena did not automatically say yes.

A family evaluator reviewed:

Diane’s treatment,

compliance,

financial stability,

attitudes toward the children,

whether she still framed care as sacrifice.

The most important question:

“What would contact give the twins?”

Not:

What does Diane deserve?

Diane had to learn that distinction.

The first supervised visit lasted thirty minutes.

Neutral center.

No pickleball bag.

No gifts beyond approved coloring books.

Leo ran toward a toy kitchen.

Maya stayed beside Elena.

Diane cried.

The supervisor said:

“Keep the emotion with the adults.”

Diane nodded.

She did not say:

Grandma missed you so much.

She said:

“Hi, Maya. Hi, Leo.”

Leo ignored her.

Normal.

Maya asked:

“Are you Mommy’s mom?”

“Yes.”

“Why don’t you live at the old house?”

Diane froze.

Elena watched.

This was the test.

Diane could say:

Your mother took it.

Instead:

“It was your mom’s house, and I moved.”

Accurate.

Elena felt something loosen.

Then Leo threw a crayon.

Diane flinched.

Old irritation crossed her face.

The supervisor noticed.

Diane took a breath.

Picked up the crayon.

Said:

“Crayons stay on the table.”

No insult.

No disgust.

A small moment.

Real change is often boring.

Afterward Maya asked:

“Can Grandma come home?”

Elena answered:

“She has her own home.”

May you like

Good.

No restoration fantasy.
