Chapter 13 - LINDA WITHOUT AN AUDIENCE

Six months passed.
Linda stopped requesting meetings.
Stopped sending long apologies.
Then Emily received a birthday card.
No guilt.
No photographs.
Just:
Happy birthday, Emily. I know I gave up the right to be part of this day. I hope it is peaceful.
Emily read it four times.
Then put it away.
Three weeks later, Karen called.
“Linda left Robert.”
Emily froze.
“Why?”
“Money, mostly. And everything else.”
Robert had blamed Linda publicly for the abandonment.
Said she was depressed.
Unstable.
Impossible.
Linda finally left.
She moved into a small apartment.
Got a receptionist job at a dental office.
No glamorous television.
No daughter funding her.
Karen said:
“She’s different.”
Emily answered:
“Maybe.”
Good word.
Maybe.
Then Linda sent one email.
I am not asking to see you. I want to correct one thing. Robert did pressure me the night you were born. I also agreed. I have spent years making his pressure the whole story because it made me feel less guilty. It wasn’t the whole story.
Emily cried.
Not because she forgave.
Because the sentence had no escape hatch.
I also agreed.
That was the first apology that did not secretly ask Emily to carry part of the blame.
Then Linda ended:
You do not owe me a response.
Emily did not respond.
May you like
For now.
That was allowed.
