Chapter 3 - THE AUDIENCE BRIEFING
Emily walked offstage.
Megan followed.
“Emily, please.”
“No.”
“We can reset.”
“You promised no surprise contact.”
“I know.”
“You promised no money pressure.”
“I didn’t know Robert would say that.”
Emily turned.
“Bullshit.”
Megan looked offended.
That told Emily enough.
Rachel Sloan was waiting near the green room.
She had watched the feed.
“Leave.”
Emily nodded.
Then a young production assistant named Tyler approached quietly.
“Ms. Carter?”
Rachel stepped between them.
“What?”
Tyler looked around.
“I think you should know what the audience was told.”
Emily stopped.
He handed Rachel a printed sheet.
AUDIENCE STORY BRIEF.
The version given to selected audience members said:
Young mother forced by poverty to surrender infant.
Parents searched unsuccessfully for decades.
Daughter later became wealthy.
Parents seek emotional reconciliation and family support in retirement.
Emily read it twice.
“Family support?”
Tyler nodded.
“Megan told the warm-up team to encourage forgiveness.”
“Did she tell them to ask me for money?”
“Not directly.”
Rachel pointed to one line.
PROMPT DISCUSSION AROUND DUTY TO AGING PARENTS.
There.
Not spontaneous.
Manufactured pressure.
Then another line:
DO NOT DISCUSS ORIGINAL ABANDONMENT LOCATION IN DETAIL.
Emily looked up.
“Why?”
Tyler swallowed.
“Megan said it was too graphic for daytime.”
Rachel asked:
“What else are they hiding?”
Tyler hesitated.
Then:
“Your parents gave production a different version of the abandonment.”
Emily’s stomach tightened.
“What version?”
“They say they left you at a church safe-drop location.”
Emily stared.
“That’s false.”
“I know.”
“How?”
Tyler looked at Rachel.
“Because legal received the old police report.”
Production knew.
They knew Emily had been found behind a motel dumpster.
They chose the church version anyway.
Rachel asked:
“Why?”
Tyler answered:
“Because the church version tests better.”
Emily laughed once.
Cold.
Her origin story had become audience optimization.
Then Tyler said:
“There’s more.”
Robert and Linda had not contacted Finding Home after years of searching.
The show contacted them.
How?
Through a DNA genealogy match entered eight months earlier.

Emily stared.
“So she was looking.”
Tyler shook his head.
“Not for you.”
Then he told them what the account username was.

Rachel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Tyler answered:
“It was created through a financial-services lead generator.”
Emily’s biological mother had submitted DNA not to find a daughter.
She had submitted it during a debt-relief ancestry promotion.
