Chapter 6 - THE CONTRACT
The separate agreement between the show and Linda and Robert was not just a participation release.
It contained:
appearance fee,
travel,
wardrobe stipend,
reunion-completion bonus.
Then one strange clause.
FAMILY CONTINUITY SEGMENT OPTION.
If Emily agreed to:
future visit,
financial assistance,
shared holiday episode,
or “material act of reconciliation,”
the parents could receive additional compensation.
Maximum:
$75,000.
Emily looked at Rachel.
“So they got paid more if I became their daughter on camera.”
“Yes.”
Then another contract.
Not with the show.
With a reputation-management agency.
Robert signed it six weeks earlier.
The agency would receive 20% of any:
appearance revenue,
crowdfunding proceeds,
family support payments,
book deal,
speaking income
arising from the reunion.
Rachel looked disgusted.
“They monetized the possibility before meeting you.”
Emily kept reading.
The agency created talking points.
WE WERE YOUNG.
WE WERE AFRAID.
WE NEVER STOPPED LOVING HER.
WE WANT FAMILY, NOT MONEY.
Emily laughed.
Robert had broken the final line on stage because he got greedy.
Then an email from the agency to Robert:
Do NOT ask for direct support during first segment. Sympathy first.
Robert replied:
Understood.
Then another:
Linda should initiate physical affection. Audience responds strongly to maternal contact.
Emily’s face went white.
The hug.
Not spontaneous.
Strategy.
Then:
If Emily resists, frame it as trauma and keep Linda emotionally open.
Emily stood.
“I want every raw recording.”
Rachel nodded.
“We’ll get them.”
Then the Host called personally.
His name was Marcus Bell.
He sounded shaken.
“I didn’t know about the contracts.”
Emily said:
“You read the audience prompts.”
Silence.
“I was given talking points.”
“You let people tell me to support them.”
“I thought it was unscripted audience reaction.”
“Then you weren’t hosting. You were decoration.”
He had no answer.
Then Marcus said:
“I have something you need to hear.”
A pre-interview recording.

Robert, off camera, joking:
“If she’s worth what they say she is, this could solve everything.”
