Chapter 11 - REX
The hardest question became:
What happens to Rex?
Emma was terrified he would be euthanized.
Claire was too.
Despite her anger.
She did not want revenge on the dog.
Animal control classified the bite as:
minor,
provoked by a complex boundary/training context,
with owner-management failures.
Rex was placed under:
mandatory confinement period,
behavioral evaluation,
no unsupervised front-yard access,
physical leash requirements,
and removal of the electronic collar.
A specialist evaluated him.
Away from the property, Rex was social.
Responsive.
No generalized aggression.
At the Bennett walkway, he became tense.
The specialist concluded:
conditioned boundary reactivity likely worsened by inconsistent electronic correction.
Rex could potentially remain safely owned under strict management.
But Diane had to comply.
Claire asked:
“What if she doesn’t?”
Marcus answered:
“Then enforcement escalates.”
Good.
The system did not need to punish Rex for Diane’s choices.
It needed to control Diane’s handling.
Animal control also tested Rex without the electronic collar.
At first he still reacted to the front boundary.
Then less.
After several structured sessions using:
distance,
leash control,
food reinforcement,
and calm retreat,
his behavior improved.
The specialist wrote:
Dog demonstrates learned anticipatory arousal at location. Response reduces when electronic stimulus removed and handler behavior becomes predictable.
Claire read the sentence twice.
Handler behavior.
Not only dog behavior.
Diane had treated Rex as if he were a security device.
Something to activate.
Correct.
Deploy.
The evaluation forced everyone to remember he was an animal learning from patterns adults created around him.
Emma liked hearing that.
“He wasn’t trying to be bad?”
“No.”
“He was scared?”
“Probably stressed and confused.”
Emma nodded.
Then:
“I was scared too.”
