Chapter 2 - SHE'S GONE

Rachel left town for one afternoon.
Not a vacation.
A work conference across the city.
Her security system stayed active.
At 1:17 p.m., her phone buzzed.
MOTION — BACK FENCE.
She opened the live feed.
Karen was halfway over.
Rachel stared.
Karen landed in the yard.
Mark jumped over behind her.
Then neighbors followed.
Coolers.
Towels.
Portable speaker.
Pool toys.
Karen shouted:
“She’s gone! Get in!”
They ran toward the water.
Rachel could barely process it.
A man jumped into the deep end.
Then another.
Mark threw drinks onto Rachel’s patio table.
“Best free pool ever!”
Everyone laughed.
Rachel’s face burned.
She called police.
Then stopped.
Not because she changed her mind.
Because she saw Karen doing something strange.
Taking photographs.
Not selfies.
Wide shots.
Fence.
Pool.
Neighbors swimming.
Patio.
Then Karen deliberately photographed the old stone plaque near the landscaping wall.
BRIARWOOD SUMMER COURT — 2003.
Rachel had never paid attention to it.
Why photograph that?
Police arrived twenty-three minutes later.
By then, most trespassers had already left through the gate Karen opened from inside.
Karen argued:
“We’ve used this pool for years.”
Rachel listened to the officer through her doorbell audio.
The officer answered:
“Ma’am, the homeowner has told you not to enter.”
Karen said:
“This is an HOA issue.”
The officer replied:
“Then handle it through the HOA, not by climbing a locked fence.”
Good.
Karen received a trespass warning.
Mark cursed.
Nobody was arrested that afternoon.
Rachel drove home.
The yard looked destroyed.
Crushed cans.
Wet towels.
Food.
Broken decorative planter.
Chlorine cloudy from sunscreen and spilled drinks.
She walked slowly.
Then saw something on the patio.
A printed packet.
Karen had dropped it.
Top page:
BRIARWOOD SUMMER COURT — SHARED AMENITY HISTORY.
Rachel stared.
Then smiled coldly.
May you like
“Fine.”
Now she knew this had never been about swimming.
