Chapter 1 - THE REFINANCE

Claire Hale went to the bank because of a letter.
Nothing dramatic.
A notice about a lien update on her beach property.
She assumed it was a mistake.
Martin Klein, branch manager, asked her to sit.
Then turned his monitor.
“Your parents refinanced your beach house.”
Claire stood.
“What?”
Martin’s face tightened.
“They took two hundred eighty-six thousand dollars.”
Claire stared.
“I never signed anything.”
Martin printed the file.
Refinance agreement.
Owner authorization.
Lien consent.
Disbursement instruction.
Claire grabbed the pages.
“That’s not my signature.”
Martin compared it with verified records.
His expression hardened.
“You’re right.”
Claire’s anger exploded.
“Freeze everything.”
Martin began checking approval history.
Then stopped.
“What?”
He stared at the screen.
“Someone inside this bank helped them.”
Claire froze.
“Who?”
Martin turned the monitor.
EXECUTIVE OVERRIDE.
Footsteps approached outside the glass office.
Martin stood.
“Claire…”
The door opened.
Evan Cole walked in.
Dark suit.
Bank badge.
Her fiancé.
He saw the approval file.
His face changed.
“Claire, listen to me.”
She stared.
Then slowly lifted her engagement ring.
“You helped them steal my house?”
“It’s not what you think.”
Claire ripped off the ring.
“Then explain your name on the approval.”
Evan froze.
Martin looked between them.
Then clicked one more line.
Override reason:
FAMILY AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED.
Claire’s voice dropped.
“By who?”
May you like
Evan looked away.
That was the first answer.
