Chapter 7 - EVAN'S VERSION

Evan asked for one meeting before Claire ended the engagement formally.
She agreed.
Martin’s office.
Glass walls.
No privacy disguised as romance.
Evan placed the ring between them.
“You can keep it.”
Claire looked at it.
“I don’t want it.”
Then he explained the sequence.
Robert told him Claire had agreed.
The old collateral file showed prior verification.
Susan supplied the trustee acknowledgment.
The refinance saved the Hale Precision account.
Evan used executive override because the system flagged signature mismatch and missing direct owner contact.
Claire stopped him.
“Read that last sentence again.”
He did not.
“You overrode a signature mismatch.”
“Yes.”
“And missing owner contact.”
“Yes.”
“That owner was me.”
“Yes.”
“Your fiancée.”
“Yes.”
Then Evan said:
“I thought you’d forgive me when it was paid off.”
Claire stared.
That sentence ended something permanently.
“You planned forgiveness before asking permission.”
Evan closed his eyes.
“I know how it sounds.”
“It sounds accurate.”
Then he gave her one thing she did not expect.
His personal emails with Susan.
Evan:
Need this funded by Friday. Robert says Claire consents but won’t engage.
Susan:
Old verification should be enough if trust acknowledgment is carried forward.
Evan:
Do it.
No instruction to forge.
No request to fake Benton’s signature.
But a clear willingness not to ask questions.
Then another email:
Evan:
Once factory refinance replaces it, beach loan disappears. Claire never needs to be dragged into bank mess.
Susan:
Cleaner for everyone.
Claire read it.
Cleaner.
Except for her.
Then Evan said:
“I didn’t steal your house.”
“No.”
“I made a bad loan decision.”
Claire shook her head.
“You made a decision about my property because you thought your judgment could replace my consent.”
He looked down.
That was the real betrayal.
Then Martin entered.
Regulators had been notified.
Evan’s executive authority was suspended.
May you like
Susan’s too.
The investigation was no longer internal enough to contain.
