Chapter 12 - THE ENGAGEMENT RING

Evan returned the last box of Claire’s belongings.
He came to the beach house only after she agreed.
He did not use a key.
He knocked.
Progress arrived too late.
Claire opened the door.
He handed her a box.
Inside:
books,
clothes,
photos,
the engagement ring.
“I told you I don’t want it.”
“Sell it.”
Claire looked at him.
“You sell it.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because I bought it thinking it meant I could build a life with you.”
Claire almost laughed.
“And then you mortgaged my house without asking.”
“I know.”
He looked exhausted.
Then he said:
“I thought helping your father would make you happy.”
“No.”
“I know now.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because I do.”
Claire looked at him.
“You did not trust me with the decision because you were afraid I’d say no.”
“Yes.”
“That means you knew consent mattered.”
Silence.
That was the sentence he could not escape.
Then Evan told her something new.
Robert had originally asked for $500,000.
Evan refused.
“Why?”
“Too much collateral exposure.”
“So you were protecting the bank.”
“Yes.”
“Not me.”
He looked down.
“No.”
There.
Finally clean.
Then Claire asked:
“If Dad had repaid the loan before I found out, would you ever have told me?”
Evan was silent for too long.
“No.”
Claire closed her eyes.
That ended whatever nostalgia remained.
She handed him the ring.
“Take it.”
He did.
Then:
“I am sorry.”
Claire nodded.
“I believe you.”
He looked surprised.
She continued:
“That doesn’t make you safe to marry.”
Evan left.
Claire watched from the porch.
The breakup no longer felt dramatic.
May you like
It felt administrative.
Like removing an authorization that should never have existed.
