Chapter 3 - THE WHITE SUV

Ryan requested every camera inside the tunnel.

Problem:

The tunnel had no public interior cameras.

Only:

entrance.

exit.

Emergency alcove sensors.

But city engineering plans showed two sealed maintenance doors.

Ryan called Transportation.

One door belonged to electrical control.

The other:

“Old service access. Decommissioned.”

Ryan hated that word.

Decommissioned often meant:

still physically there.

He drove to the tunnel with Captain Robert Hayes from Traffic Intelligence and two officers.

The second service door looked welded shut.

Ryan touched the seam.

Fresh dust disturbed near the bottom.

Then he found tire marks.

Not on the main lane.

A faint arc leading toward the wall.

Robert frowned.

“There’s no driveway.”

Ryan looked at the concrete.

Paint color changed slightly.

He tapped it.

Hollow.

The “wall” was a retractable composite panel disguised as concrete.

Transportation records showed no such feature.

Someone had modified the tunnel after construction.

They forced entry.

Behind the panel:

a narrow vehicle bay.

Drainage trench.

Industrial lights.

Pressure-wash equipment.

Ventilation fans.

On the floor:

black flakes.

Ryan crouched.

Peelable automotive coating.

A temporary rubberized spray film.

Under ultraviolet light, more black material coated the drains.

Robert said:

“They washed it off.”

Ryan nodded.

The SUV had been white underneath.

The kidnapper entered black.

Drove into hidden bay.

Stripped enough coating with solvent and pressure equipment.

Exited white.

Not in thirty seconds.

The exit footage showed the white SUV eight minutes after the black SUV entered.

Enough time.

Then Ryan found something near the drain.

A torn beige thread.

Michael’s jacket.

Alive when he reached the bay.

Ryan stood.

“Where does this room go?”

A rear door opened into an old underground delivery network once used by convention-center vendors.

Most sections sealed.

Not all.

May you like

The kidnapper had not simply changed the car.

He had access to a forgotten part of the city.
