Chapter 15 - NO SECRET NAME

Three years after the fake wedding, Simone was thirty-two.

Julian was thirty-eight.

Their marriage was public but not performative.

People still cared more than Simone wished.

They learned to tolerate it.

Deline built a small custom tailoring studio.

Not a Bellamy vanity project.

She rented space.

Paid staff.

Made mistakes.

Carmen visited once.

Deline asked her to book an appointment like everyone else.

That story made Simone laugh for days.

Then came a winter charity gala.

Same hotel chain.

Different ballroom.

Simone considered not going.

Julian asked:

“Because of the room?”

“Because of the memories.”

“Want to skip?”

“No.”

They attended.

Simone wore the pale-blue coat Deline made over a black dress.

Deline arrived separately.

No bridal gown.

No pearls.

No performance.

For twenty minutes, nothing happened.

That was wonderful.

Then an executive who had never met Simone approached Julian.

“Chairman Marzano, is this your wife?”

Years earlier, that question would have triggered secrecy calculations.

Now Julian looked at Simone.

Not answering for her.

Simone smiled.

“Yes.”

The executive shook her hand.

“Pleasure.”

Then walked away.

That was it.

No gasp.

No reveal.

No hierarchy shift.

Just information.

Later Deline joined them.

She looked at Simone’s coat.

“You wore it.”

“Yes.”

“Looks better on you.”

“Obviously.”

They laughed.

Julian watched like a man approaching a wild animal sanctuary.

Deline said:

“You can relax.”

“I don’t trust either of you.”

“Fair.”

Then the band started.

Julian held out his hand to Simone.

She took it.

Deline watched them dance.

For a moment jealousy moved across her face.

Simone saw it.

Deline saw that Simone saw it.

Then Deline shrugged.

No explosion.

No competition.

Just a feeling passing through.

That was growth.

Later, near midnight, Simone walked past the same kind of banquet table where she had once fallen beside torn fabric.

She stopped.

Not because she was afraid.

Because memory asked to be noticed.

Julian joined her.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

Then Deline approached carrying a small sewing pouch.

Simone raised one eyebrow.

“Absolutely not.”

Deline laughed and opened it.

Thread.

Needles.

A tiny pair of embroidery scissors.

She held them up.

“Emergency hem kit.”

Julian said:

“I’m calling security.”

All three laughed.

Then Deline handed the pouch to Simone.

“Keep it.”

Simone did.

Three years earlier, Deline believed being chosen by Julian would prove she had finally beaten her sister.

Carmen believed a fake marriage could become financial leverage.

Lydia believed humiliation could reset family power.

Julian and Simone believed secrecy could protect love from all of it.

Every one of those beliefs failed in a different way.

The truth they eventually learned was simpler.

Love did not become more real when announced.

Privacy did not become safer when nobody could correct a lie.

Jealousy did not become destiny.

And family did not have to be a contest unless someone kept score.

Simone looked around the ballroom.

Nobody was staring.

Good.

Then Julian leaned toward her.

“My wife?”

She smiled.

“Still.”

No surprise.

No reveal.

No secret.

May you like

Just the truth said at normal volume.

THE END
