Chapter 10 - ELAINE FINALLY SAID IT

At the café, Elaine arrived alone.

No Robert.

No Jenna.

She hugged Zoe first.

Eli second.

Eli allowed it, but his body stayed slightly stiff.

Elaine noticed.

That hurt her.

Good, Daryl thought, then immediately hated himself for thinking it.

Punishment was not the goal.

Awareness was.

They ate pancakes.

Talked about school.

Zoe explained an entire imaginary civilization living in tide pools.

Elaine listened.

For thirty minutes, everyone behaved like a normal family.

Then Eli asked:

“Grandma, why did you laugh when my boat broke?”

Elaine froze.

She had not laughed.

Robert had.

But she had lifted her wine and told Daryl not to ruin the weekend.

From Eli’s perspective, same category.

“I didn’t laugh.”

“You didn’t help.”

Children.

No legal maneuvering.

No emotional escape.

Elaine’s eyes filled.

“You’re right.”

Eli looked surprised.

Daryl did too.

Elaine continued.

“I should have gotten up.”

“Why didn’t you?”

She looked down.

“Because I was scared everyone would start fighting.”

Eli frowned.

“But they were hurting my stuff.”

“Yes.”

“So you let them so nobody would fight?”

Elaine closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Eli thought.

“That’s dumb.”

Daryl coughed into his coffee to hide a laugh.

Elaine actually smiled through tears.

“Yes. It was.”

Then she looked at Daryl.

“I need to tell you something.”

He waited.

“Jenna isn’t the only one who used the rental money.”

He knew that.

“Dad used it to cover something.”

“What?”

Elaine’s hands shook.

“A loan.”

Daryl’s stomach tightened.

“What loan?”

Robert had borrowed $180,000 against his remaining retirement brokerage account two years earlier.

Why?

To help Jenna settle her divorce and keep her children in private school.

The rental money serviced the loan payments.

Daryl stared.

“So Dad used my house to pay debt he took for Jenna.”

“Yes.”

“Did Jenna know?”

“I think some of it.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

Daryl sat back.

It was all one system.

Robert rescuing Jenna.

Daryl rescuing Robert.

Then Robert using Daryl’s asset to fund his own rescue.

A loop of generosity without consent.

Elaine whispered:

“I thought you’d forgive us if you ever found out.”

Daryl looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because you always do.”

That sentence hurt more than accusation.

May you like

Not because it was false.

Because it had been true.
