Chapter 18 - ELI DECIDES
Eli was eleven when Daryl asked whether he wanted to see his cousins.
Not required.
Not engineered.
Asked.
Eli thought for two days.
Then said yes.
The twins came to a neutral place first.
A park in Santa Monica.
They looked older.
Less loud.
Their mother stayed twenty yards away with Daryl.
One twin held a box.
Inside was a new wooden sailboat kit.
Not a replacement.
That distinction had been explained.
The boy said:
“We know it isn’t the same.”
Eli looked at him.
“No.”
“We wanted to build one with you.”
Eli stared at the box.
Then at Daryl.
Daryl said nothing.
This choice was Eli’s.
Finally he said:
“Okay.”
The three boys sat at a picnic table and began sorting pieces.
Awkward.
Quiet.
Real.
Zoe climbed on a nearby structure and shouted unnecessary instructions.
Jenna cried discreetly.
Daryl pretended not to notice.
When the second boat was finished weeks later, Eli did something surprising.
He brought the repaired original and the new one to Malibu.
Placed both on the shelf.
One crooked.
One clean.
