Chapter 15 - ELAINE MOVED OUT OF THE MIDDLE
Elaine spent most of her marriage in the middle.
Between Robert and the children.
Between Jenna and consequences.
Between Daryl and anger.
She called it peacemaking.
Daryl now understood it often meant protecting the person causing more damage from the discomfort of being confronted.
Six months after the Malibu incident, Elaine stopped.
Not dramatically.
She simply began telling the truth first.
When Jenna called crying that Daryl had “stolen her future beach house,” Elaine said:
“It was never yours.”
Jenna hung up.
When Robert complained that Daryl was humiliating him in court, Elaine said:
“You humiliated yourself by hiding the rentals.”
Robert slept in the guest room for a week.
When Daryl asked why she had never pushed back before, Elaine answered:
“Because conflict scared me more than unfairness.”
Daryl nodded.
“That’s honest.”
“I don’t like it.”
“Truth rarely asks permission.”
Anna could have said that.
Elaine began therapy.
Robert refused.
At least initially.
Then the marriage cracked.
Not because Daryl wanted it.
Because family systems depend on roles. When one person stops performing theirs, everyone else feels the floor move.
Elaine rented a small apartment in Santa Barbara for three months.
Robert called it abandonment.
Daryl stayed out of it.
Not his marriage.
