Chapter 19 - THE HOUSE RULES
Daryl wrote the house rules on one page.
Not legal terms.
Family terms.
1. No one is a guest because of income.
2. Children do not lose rooms because louder children want them.
3. Nothing sentimental gets mocked.
4. No rentals.
5. No surprise guests.
6. Ask before using what is not yours.
7. Adults correct their own children.
8. “Family” is not an excuse for ignoring consent.
9. If someone says stop, stop.
10. Whoever breaks the sailboat rule buys lunch forever.
Eli insisted on number ten.
Daryl printed the rules and framed them near the kitchen.
Robert hated the frame.
“That’s humiliating.”
Daryl smiled.
“You’re welcome not to read it.”
Robert had changed slowly.
Very slowly.
He repaid part of what he owed.
Stopped using the phrase family beach house.
Said Daryl’s house.
At first with visible pain.
Then normally.
That linguistic shift mattered more than money.
Elaine eventually moved back with him after boundaries of her own were written into their marriage.
Robert started therapy six months after declaring therapy ridiculous.
No one congratulated him too loudly.
Jenna and the twins visited twice that summer.
With permission.
They brought groceries.
Paid for their own activities.
The first night, Jenna stood in the hallway and asked:
“Which room?”
Daryl pointed.
“The downstairs guest room for you. Bunk room for the boys.”
She nodded.
No argument.
Eli watched from the stairs.
Then relaxed.
