Chapter 1 - THE WINE

Vanessa Miller was already standing beside Haley when she swung the glass.
The impact was sharp.
Non-graphic.
Humiliating.
Red wine burst across Haley’s silver-gray dress, soaked her hair, and ran down her cheek.
“You don’t belong here.”
Haley recoiled.
One hand flew to the side of her head.
Kayla Carter, Vanessa’s sixteen-year-old daughter, burst out laughing beside the birthday cake.
“She looks pathetic.”
Haley slowly straightened.
Wine dripped from her chin.
Margaret remained seated.
No concern.
No anger at Vanessa.
Only irritation at the possibility of conflict.
“Don’t make a scene.”
Haley looked from her sister to her niece to her mother.
That was the moment something ended.
Not the family.
Not yet.
The explanation she had been giving the family for years.
Vanessa is stressed.
Kayla is young.
Mom hates conflict.
Everyone is grieving differently.
Haley picked up her handbag.
Walked out.
No shouting.
No revenge speech.
The next morning she sat alone at her kitchen table and opened a heavy cream-colored envelope from Westlake Community Bank.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.

She spread the documents across the table.
There were draws she did not recognize.

She picked up her phone.
“Connect me to my lawyer.”
Then, when Melissa Grant answered:
“Remove my name from everything.”
Melissa paused.
“I can remove you from some things.”
Haley closed her eyes.
May you like
“And the rest?”
“We find out what they already attached you to.”
