Chapter 13 - KAYLA ASKS THE WRONG QUESTION

Months later Kayla visited Haley.

Without Vanessa.

She stood awkwardly at the kitchen counter.

“Are you going to make Mom lose the company?”

Haley looked at her.

“I’m not trying to.”

“But if the bank cuts the line—”

“The bank makes its own decisions.”

Kayla looked down.

“Mom says you’re punishing us.”

Haley said:

“I stopped guaranteeing new debt.”

“That feels like punishment.”

“I know.”

Kayla frowned.

Haley continued:

“If someone stops paying for something you rely on, it can feel like they caused the problem.”

“Did you pay?”

“Not exactly.”

Then Haley explained the guaranty in simple terms.

Kayla listened.

At the end she said:

“So you were the emergency person for money.”

“Yes.”

“And nobody told you how many emergencies there were.”

Haley almost smiled.

“That’s one way to put it.”
